If you know anything about Thinking Cap® you know we are SCORM fanatics. Standards rule. So when we extended the capabilities of Thinking Cap LMS to support additional types of learning beyond eLearning we looked to the SCORM architecture for cues on how to maintain flexibility and openness. Thus Learning Paths™ was born.
Learning Paths are modeled on and equivalent to IMS Manifests. Our Learning Paths let you define a Tree of Objectives and then allow you to hang Activities on each Objective along with rules on how Activities can satisfy each Objective. The flexibility of this approach allows for the description of any set of Objectives so it can be used to map competencies, certifications, skills gaps and even succession planning. Add to the flexibility of the tree structure the ability to create your own Activity Types.
The only built in Activity in our Learning Management System is eLearning and all Courses are available as Activities. You can create additional Activities to match your learning model. For example "One on One" can be an Activity Type for Coaching. "Read a Book" can be another type. "Go to a Lecture", the types are endless. Each type can be set to be a fixed time event so we can manage a full set of offline activities. What all Activity Types share is they are all authenticated. The types of authentication Thinking Cap supports are, "Update of a Completion Code", "Learner Self Sign Off", "Moderator Batch and Real Time sign off" and "Upload Document". Our LMS covers every possible way a user can be authenticated and allows us to support any Activity Type you can imagine.
Support for Fixed Time Events extends to allowing Thinking Cap Learning Management System and Divisions in the LMS to define Resources like rooms and projectors that can be tied to instances of Activities. We even support set Activity sizes and waitlisting for the creation of truly blended learning. Support for both Global and Division owned Activities and Objectives allow for Learning Paths to be tailored for all areas of the Organization. Learners can view the Learning Path as a tree or in calendar mode or even download their Learning Path to Microsoft Outlook© for total integration.
Creating Learning Paths is fast and simple to do. The LMS Learning Path editor is 100% browser based and able to be run on all popular browsers without downloading software. This tool gives the user full access to the library of Objectives and Activities and allows you to design your Objective trees and set rules for how a group of Activities can satisfy the Objective. This opens up many different options for how a user may satisfy an objective thus making Learning Paths far more supportive of Learners and Learning Styles than traditional competency tools.
